2013 Lewis Mumford Award Winners

Architects/ Designers/ Planners for Social Responsibility (ADPSR) is pleased to honor its 20th annual Lewis Mumford Awardees for outstanding contributions in areas that embrace ADPSR’s mission of world peace, protection of the environment, and socially responsible development:

Peace: The International Coalition of Sites of Conscience, New York

Environment: The Foundation for a Green Future, Inc., Boston

Development: The Center for Urban Pedagogy, New York

The International Coalition of Sites of Conscience is a worldwide network of “Sites of Conscience”, including historic sites that commemorate past struggles while continuing the work towards social justice. The Coalition has 17 Accredited Sites of Conscience and nearly 300 individual and institutional members around the world. The Coalition provides direct funding and technical assistance, organizes learning exchanges, conducts strategic advocacy, and provides local networks for sites and the Sites of Conscience movement. www.sitesofconscience.org/

The Foundation for a Green Future runs programs to educate our school children and our communities about the importance of bringing nature back into our cities. Their programs include the Boston GreenFest, the Turn Over the Page (TOP) Green Office Program, GreenRoof 2020, and the GreenPartners Curriculum. They also engage in social and economic education programs to create new jobs and to bring sustainability into the workplace. www.foundationforagreenfuture.org/

The Center for Urban Pedagogy (CUP) has worked for sixteen years to provide tools to facilitate civic engagement to the broad community on a variety of complex topics, such as zoning regulations and food access. With a special emphasis on social justice, CUP uses design and art to build bridges between “experts” in a field and the general public. www.welcometocup.org

The awards ceremony was part of the opening plenary at the Beyond Resilience: Actions for a Just Metropolis conference held June 7th, 2013, 7:00-9:00 pm, at Higgins Hall, 61 St. James Place, The Pratt Institute, Brooklyn, New York. www.justmetropolis.org

In 1992, ADPSR instituted an annual Lewis Mumford awards program to honor people and organizations whose work exemplifies social responsibility. The awards were named after Lewis Mumford (1895-1990) an American historian, sociologist, philosopher, and critic, noted for his study of cities and urban architecture. Lewis Mumford's writings continue to inspire and remind us that architecture, design, and planning must respond to human needs, harmonize with its surroundings, and reflect the aspirations and social context of our civilization.
